Последователи кальвинизма XVI в. в Англии, выступавшие за углубление Реформации, проведенной королем в форме создания англиканской церкви, против абсолютизма. После ряда репрессивных мер английских властей многие из них были вынуждены эмигрировать. Участвовали в колонизации Северной Америки. Среди групп, отколовшихся от англиканской церкви, были и пилигримы [ Pilgrims], основавшие в 1620 Плимутскую колонию [ Plymouth Colony], а в 1630 Колонию Массачусетского залива [ Massachusetts Bay Colony]. Оказали огромное влияние не только на колонии Новой Англии [ New England], но и на все колонии к северу от Вирджинии. Прибыли в Америку с твердым намерением создать новый "град на холме" [ City upon the Hill], считали своим долгом как избранники Бога руководить всей жизнью новой нации по Божьим заветам, оставленным в Библии. Создали в колонии жесткую унию церкви и государства, сохранявшуюся до конца XVII в. В течение двух столетий оказывали влияние на религию, мораль и культуру Нового Света; их взгляды легли в основу современных конфессий конгрегационалистов [ Congregationalists], пресвитериан [ Presbyterians] и баптистов [ Baptists]. В XIX в. это влияние было уже косвенным, но оно ощущается до наших дней в виде требования, чтобы сторонники современных конфессий, выросших из пуританства, руководствовались словом Божьим в практике повседневной жизни
